Summer Fun on a Budget

(4 Minute Read) — Summer is a magical time for families. School’s out, the days are long, and there’s an undeniable urge to get out and make the most of the sunshine. However, for families on a tight budget, planning summer activities can be challenging. At Unitus Community Credit Union, we believe that you don’t have to break the bank to have a memorable summer. Here’s a comprehensive guide to affordable summer fun for families, many of which are free!

Explore Local Parks and Nature Trails

One of the best ways to enjoy summer is by spending time outdoors, and luckily, nature doesn’t charge an entrance fee. Many of our local communities have local parks, nature trails, and hiking paths that are perfect for a family outing. Pack a picnic, bring a frisbee or a soccer ball, and spend the day exploring and playing together. It’s a great way to stay active and appreciate the beauty of your local environment.

Visit the Library

Libraries are treasure troves of free entertainment. Many libraries offer summer reading programs for kids, complete with rewards and fun activities. Additionally, libraries often host free events such as story hours, craft sessions, and family movie nights. It’s a perfect way to keep the kids engaged and learning during the summer months.

Have a Backyard Campout

Camping is a classic summer activity, but you don’t need to head to a campsite to enjoy it. Set up a tent in your backyard and have a campout at home. You can tell stories, roast marshmallows over a barbecue or fire pit, and stargaze. It’s an adventure right at your doorstep that the whole family can enjoy.

Free or Low-Cost Museums and Community Events

Many museums offer free admission days or discounted rates for families. Check out local museums, art galleries, and cultural centers to see what they have to offer. Additionally, keep an eye on community event calendars for free or low-cost events such as outdoor concerts, festivals, and farmers’ markets. We recommend following us on social media—every Friday we post “You, Us, This Weekend,” a comprehensive roundup of fun events happening in and around the Portland metro area.

DIY Crafts and Home Projects

Get creative at home with do-it-yourself (DIY) crafts and projects. Websites like Pinterest are full of ideas for fun and inexpensive crafts that kids can make using household items. You can also take on a family project, such as starting a small garden, building a birdhouse, or creating a family scrapbook. These activities are not only fun but also provide great bonding opportunities.

Play Tourist in Your Own City

Sometimes, the best adventures are right in your own backyard. Take a day to explore your city as if you were tourists. Visit local landmarks, walk around downtown areas, and discover hidden gems. Many cities offer free walking tours or have historical sites and parks that are free to visit. Check out Travel Oregon for some inspiration.

Beach Days and Water Play

Head to the coast or a nearby lake or river. A day at the beach is a quintessential summer activity and can be very budget-friendly. Bring your own snacks, sunscreen, and beach toys for a day of fun in the sun. Don’t want to face the crowds? Set up a sprinkler or kiddie pool in your backyard for some water play.

Cooking and Baking Together

Spend some time in the kitchen with your kids, cooking and baking together. It’s a fun way to teach them valuable life skills and enjoy some delicious treats. You can make homemade popsicles, bake cookies, or even try your hand at making ice cream. Use seasonal fruits and ingredients to keep costs down.

Scavenger or Treasure Hunts

Organize a scavenger hunt or treasure hunt for your kids. Create a list of items for them to find around the house, yard, or neighborhood. You can also set up clues and hide small treasures for them to discover. It’s an exciting and interactive way to keep them engaged and entertained.

Visit Farmers’ Markets

Farmers’ markets are not only great places to find fresh, local produce but also wonderful for family outings. Many markets have live music, food samples, and activities for kids. It’s a fun way to support local farmers and artisans while enjoying the summer atmosphere. Travel Oregon has a great interactive map to find a market near you.

Volunteer Together

Volunteering is a fantastic way to spend time together as a family while giving back to the community. Look for local volunteer opportunities that are suitable for kids, such as community clean-ups, helping at animal shelters, or assisting at food banks. It’s a meaningful way to teach kids about compassion and community involvement. It’s also a great way to beat the heat!

Explore Free Online Resources

The internet is full of free resources that can provide hours of entertainment and education for kids. Websites like National Geographic Kids, PBS Kids, and NASA offer interactive games, videos, and activities. You can also find virtual tours of museums, zoos, and aquariums.

Plan a Day Trip

If you have a bit of room in your budget for travel, consider planning a day trip to a nearby town or attraction. Look for places within a couple of hours’ drive that offer free or inexpensive activities. State parks, historical sites, and scenic drives can make for a memorable day out without a hefty price tag.

Making Memories

Summer is a time for family, fun, and making memories, and you don’t need a big budget to enjoy it. By exploring local resources, getting creative at home, and spending time outdoors, you can create a summer full of joy and adventure. At Unitus Community Credit Union, we’re here to support our members in making the most of your time together. Happy summer
