Preserving Our Wetlands: Unitus’ Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

(2 Minute Read) — At Unitus, we believe that strong communities are built on healthy ecosystems. That’s why we’ve proudly partnered with The Wetlands Conservancy to support the preservation and care of our invaluable wetland ecosystems. This partnership underscores our dedication to environmental sustainability and community impact.
In December, Steven Stapp and James Alexander, members of our leadership team, explored the five acres of dedicated wetlands on the Unitus Business Center–Tigard property (watch the video here). This visit was more than just a stroll through nature; it was a critical assessment to ensure the wetland’s condition, remove debris, and lay the groundwork for future initiatives. During their exploration, they encountered thriving native grasses and plants, diverse wildlife, and areas that may need restoration.
A $25,000 Commitment to Conservation
As part of our partnership, Unitus awarded The Wetlands Conservancy a $25,000 Community Impact Grant. This funding will help the organization continue its vital work, from restoration efforts to community education and access improvement. Together, we aim to ensure that these wetlands remain a haven for wildlife and thrive as a critical part of our ecosystem.
Focus on the Future
Our collaboration with The Wetlands Conservancy is just beginning. We’ll work together to assess the health of our wetlands and identify opportunities for restoration. We celebrated International Wetlands Day on February 2, joining global efforts to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands. In April, Unitus staff will roll up their sleeves to clean, maintain, and restore our wetlands, ensuring its beauty for future generations.
This partnership isn’t just about preserving a piece of our natural heritage. It’s about fostering a culture of care and sustainability that can ripple out to create broader community impact. We invite our members and neighbors to join us in this mission, whether it’s through volunteering, learning about local ecosystems, or simply appreciating the natural beauty of our local wetlands.
Why Wetlands Matter
Wetlands are often called the “lungs of the Earth.” They play a crucial role in improving water quality, providing habitat for wildlife, and mitigating the effects of climate change. By supporting wetland conservation, we’re not only preserving biodiversity but also protecting a critical natural resource for future generations.
